We wish to inspire students’ curiosity and interest to explore the world and
its people and to further develop a love of learning. We intend to equip students
with geographical skills to develop their knowledge through studying places,
people and natural and human environments. We hope to deepen their
understanding of the Earth’s human and physical forms and processes.

Geography, by its nature, is an investigative subject which will be enriched through fieldwork opportunities. Through our teaching, we wish to provoke thought, questions and to encourage students to discover answers to their own questions through exploration and research to enable them to gain a greater understanding and knowledge of the world and their place within it. Year 5 students carryout a microclimate study on site, gathering data which is interpreted through a series of graphs. Year 7 have the opportunity to go on the Iceland International Trip, with a focus on tectonics and coasts. In Year 8, there is a full year group trip to Seaham, County Durham where pupils explore coastal landforms and collect data which is interpreted in Geography lessons through many data presentation methods and a written evaluation of individual findings.

Children’s knowledge and skills will develop progressively as they move through
the school, not only to enable them to meet the requirements of the National
Curriculum but to prepare them to become competent geographers in secondary
education.

Careers have been integrated into classwork and homework tasks across KS2-KS3 whereby all homework tasks have an additional activity which requires students to research the roles and skills required of many careers directly linked to Geography, such as a seismologist, population analyst, GIS specialist and meteorologist. There are many lessons that have a careers focus where students take on the role of a specialist to learn how to carry out activities linked to specific job roles, for example Year 8 students take on the role of a Coastal Management Officer where they manage a budget and complete a decision making activity based on coastal protection methods. This equips them with highly effective geographical skills such as data interpretation, map reading, extended writing and decision making.

Teaching about careers in the Geography Curriculum

We aim to teach our pupils how to be good geographers and to consider which career paths may be suited to someone who is good at geography or has a real interest in the subject. Over the course of our 4 year curriculum we will discuss roles such as meteorologist, coastal management, pollution analyst, cartographer, demographer, seismologist, conservationist, hydrologist, data analyst and GIS specialist.
